IV Sedation
Sedation Dentistry - Intravenous (IV) sedation
From Robert J. LaCarrubba & Associates - Serving Niagra Falls, Kenmore, Amherst, and Buffalo, NY.
In order to facilitate dental surgery for a highly anxious patient, a tranquilizer drug is administered into the blood stream through IV sedation. In the vast majority of patients, IV sedation produces an extremely strong sensation of deep relaxation and well-being.
Patients who have experienced IV sedation report remembering little to nothing from their dental surgery. Administered by injecting a sedative agent into one of the superficial veins of your arm or hand, IV sedation helps calm patients undergoing various dental procedures. Since the superficial vein is found just under the skin and the needles used are extremely thin, pain is minimal. Majority of people are good candidates, but some medical conditions such as severe lung diseases, some heart problems, obesity and anorexia prevent the use of IV sedation.
IV sedation, unlike general anesthesia, allows you to remain conscious yet deeply relaxed throughout your dental surgery.
